Design Review: Bugatti Chiron
Is Only Incidentally An Automobile

The Bugatti Chiron is not a car; instead, it's a nearly useless dazzling object -- the rolling equivalent of the bejeweled Easter eggs made for two czars of Russia by Peter Carl Faberge. The Chiron exists only because a megalomaniacal modern czar issued an imperious edict that it should exist, cost no object. The Chiron, itself a Volkswagen Group product, is about far as you can get from a purely functional, utilitarian automobile like the KdF Volkswagen or a Ford Model T.

Its construction quality is surpassingly fine, and it is enormously impressive in that the bulky mechanical mass within its shell produces 1,500 horsepower (with more to come, they say) and can do so for about 8 minutes before it has consumed all the fuel the car can carry. But there's no way around the fact that an egregiously overpowered 16-cylinder, 2-metric-ton, 250-plus mph two-seater is an absolutely absurd device.

Mercedes-Benz GLT Pickup Truck
Spied at Testing Facility

Following a few key details from Mercedes-Benz and an official teaser image, spy photographers have captured a camouflaged pickup that appears to be the Mercedes-Benz truck.

Automobile European Bureau chief Georg Kacher revealed earlier this year that the truck will essentially be a re-skinned Nissan D23 Navara, a mid-size pickup sold outside the U.S. and not closely linked to the U.S.-market Frontier. The Daimler-Nissan partnership will likely produce a truck that has all of the renowned niceties of Mercedes with the rugged capability of its Nissan bones. The truck is likely to carry the new GLT nameplate; "GL" is now Benz’s prefix for all things SUV and truck, as seen by entries like the GLC and GLS SUVs.

Electric or Diesel: BMW X5 xDrive40e
vs. Range Rover Sport Td6

Large luxury SUVs are like cable television. There's still a big market out there, but it's becoming more difficult to stay current as the market changes at such a rapid pace.

In television, the internet has been the disruptive force of change, while in the automotive industry, fuel efficiency and emissions regulations are pushing automakers to pursue ever more advanced technologies and solutions.

But are diesel and electric variants of big SUVs like the Range Rover Sport Td6 and the plug-in hybrid BMW X5 xDrive40e really shaking things up Netflix- and Hulu-style?
